It is said that in Germany, Amanita muscaria mushrooms are a symbol of good luck, because this type of mushroom only grows in the root zones of certain types of trees, which also happen to be the kinds of trees we typically associate with Christmas trees. They also happen to be a favorite food of reindeer! These psychedelic mushrooms have a long and varied history of use during the winter season. Sami shamans of northern Scandinavia often used them and gifted them during the winter as a way to communicate with ancestors and communicate their knowledge back to the people. The Sami people would thank the shamans by giving them food and drink (think milk and cookies!).
