Around this time, gingerbread fell out of favor as a beloved holiday treat. Likewise, it was said that witches ate gingerbread figures that cause the death of their enemies. This bit of folklore actually inspired the Grimm Brothers tale of Hansel and Gretel, which interestingly enough brought gingerbread back into popular favor (roughly 200 years later).
