Warding is inspired by the all familiar jack-o-lantern. And if you've been following me for a while, you know that we get jack-o-lanterns by way of the Irish and the festival of Samhain. During this festival, turnips would be carved with faces and placed outside homes to ward off spirits that walked the earth while the veil between worlds was at its thinnest. When Irish immigrants came to America, they brought this tradition with them but found pumpkins plentiful and possibly easier to carve.
Warding is made with pumpkin puree and infused with sage for protection and yarrow for its healing powers. It is naturally colored with annatto powder and scented with essential oils of clementine, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. I added maple syrup as a nod to the Native Americans who first cultivated the pumpkin.
